Transitional Words & Phrases

  • First, using the transitional words and phrases handout, add at least 4 transitional words and phrases to the following paragraph and repost:
One reason people lie is to achieve personal power. Achieving personal power is helpful for someone who pretends to be more confident than he really is. One of my friends threw a party at his house last month. He asked me to come to his party and bring a date. I didn’t have a girlfriend. One of my other friends, who had a date to go to the party with, asked me about my date. I didn’t want to be embarrassed, so I claimed that I had a lot of work to do. I said I could easily find a date even better than his if I wanted to. I also told him that his date was ugly. I achieved power to help me feel confident. I embarrassed my friend and his date. This lie helped me at the time, since then it has made me look down on myself.

  • Next, also using the handout, write one paragraph on the topic of your choice of at least 6 sentences that incorperates 4 transitional phrases and/or words and post online.
  • Last, when you are finished, look at your essay and incorperate some of these phrases and words into it in preparation for draft 3 to make your ideas flow more smoothly into each other.
Some suggestions for your paragraph topics:
  • Registering for classes
  • Getting to school in the morning
  • Any "how to" instructions: ex: How to ask for a date or How to ask for a raise
Caveat: Using first, next and last should be avoided for this assignment. Also, please do not take any "shortcuts" such as modifying existing writing unless it is your own as this will not have the same impact upon your writing skills.

  4. One reason people lie is to gaining personal power, a quality lacking in those who think a lie is the only option to avoid consequences. Achieving personal power is helpful for someone who pretends to be more confident than he really is. One of my friends threw a party at his house last month. Not having had a girlfriend at the time, I lied. One of my other friends, who had a date to go to the party with, asked me about my date but embarrassment was not on my list of priorities, so I claimed that I had a lot of work to do and never went. I told him I could easily find a date, and one even better than his if I wanted to at that. Lacking the confidence to confront him with the real situation, I also told him that his date was ugly. I achieved power to help me feel confident. I embarrassed my friend and his date. This lie helped me at the time, but one lie turned into a few in the matter of minutes. Since then it has made me look down on myself and reconsider how I manage myself.

  8. Getting to school on a Monday morning is such a trouble from a long weekend. Trying to remember everything you learn from the week before is also hard. Making it on time to school on the other hand is what really worries one. First of all, like setting your alarm clock to 7 o’clock or 8 o’clock in the morning. So you could take a shower, eat, and get a ride to school so you will not be late, as well as not missing anything during class. If being late to class does not matter to you, as usual that is your responsibility and no one else.

  9. Many people sometimes think that I’m not a very religious person moreover they think I don’t believe in god at all. But I'm the complete opposite of what people think. I try to make it to church as much as I can and read the bible whenever I find the chance to but by the same token I also have two jobs and I'm a full time student and above all I have a one year old that demands a lot of attention. Nonetheless I take time out of day to sit and reflect on my life and thank god for everything that I have and everything he has helped me to let go.

    pt 2-
Getting to school in the morning is such a drag. Particularly coming from a person that hates mornings, I myself hate having school so early in the morning. Aside from being tired, my brain cannot function correctly so early in the morning. That is to say I’m not a morning person however; I would enjoy waking up early for something more enticing. Being tired, not being able to function so early, and having to travel a distance, are some of many reasons why getting to school in the mornings are so frustrating. After all, who likes going to school so early in the morning?

Getting up for school in the morning is a very hectic time to begin my day. Besides, being a mother part of my job is to get my kids ready for school and making some breakfast so they won’t go to school on an empty stomach. Even waking up earlier than usual, I still tend to always be in a rush. Aside from being in a rush, when I finally leave my house, since I live near the intersection going towards New York the traffic makes me go bonkers. Nonetheless, I try to stay positive and keep my cool so I won’t end up getting to school in a bad mood. In short, getting ready for school in the morning is not my most favorite part of the day, even though I’m grateful of being able to open my eyes and start a new day with my family and friends.

  13. Going to school in the morning can be very unpleasant for any who attend any type of school environments. We all try not to be late and look decent to attend school. However it’s hard to wake up in the morning if you’re not a morning person. There are a lot of solutions that you can do to avoid these problems. For example you can put 3-4 alarm clocks if you’re a heavy sleeper, ask someone to wake you up or in this case join the gym and go early in the morning. A lot of other ways I can mention, but the main point is oneself. In other words if you personally don’t care about being late to school or school in generally then you won’t show any effort towards school.

  14. You can have all the money in the world and still be in the opposite Direction of where you want to be in life. You need to be able to love what you do, Emphasis the people around you, and most importantly love yourself. Everything I have been through in my life taught me a valuable lesson, you can't possibly give someone or something your 100 percent if you don't love yourself. Generalizing you only get one life to live, so live as if tomorrow was your last day and love unconditionally, appreciating every single day.

  15. For the most part, getting up in the morning is a struggle. That is to say, we all enjoy sleeping in and being relaxed from the stressful events of life. However, there is nothing better than being sure of the fact that you will have a long lasting day that will make time to do everything that is on schedule. Consequently, everything done in one day will make room for free time and fewer worries for the days ahead. I believe that a little effort to wake up early each morning will make a huge impact in one’s day and especially in one’s life.

  16. F1 racing is one of the most exciting spectator sports around. Also it is one of the most dangerous. Even so major auto makers like Ferrari, Lotus, McLaren, and Mercedes Benz invest time and money in it. In fact F1's popularity has grown so much that it is coming to New Jersey in 2015. A lot of this growth in fans is due to one man in particular. That man is non other than Michael Schumacher, who is like the Jordan of F1 racing. However contrary to Jordan, Schumacher is not universally beloved by fans of racing. Some see him as a "dirty" racer. Yet no matter what you think of him there is no denying what he has done and what he continues to do for F1 racing.

  20. In addition to the time we wait in line to get checked in the kiosks of the airlines, moreover we have to wait longer while we go over “security checkpoints”. As a result of the attacks of September 11, 2011; security in airports has dramatically changed in United States and around the world. Travelers are limited to take a specific size of carry on and luggage and even they have to be aware of the restrictions of certain items and about the quantity of them. For instance, last year in Kennedy airport, I saw a lady throwing her bottles of perfume because they did not match the dimension required. However, travelers protest about that fact. I don’t like to wait but in this specific case I don’t mind. In essence, these rules about security in airports are intended to protect us; after all, they are for our own security.

  21. Corruption in the Dominican Republic
Once a peaceful country, the Dominican Republic has fallen into a wave of corruption and violence. The corruption comes from the highest ranks of the Executive power to the lowlife in small neighborhoods as a result of this not only the low class has been affected. The corruption has created violence beyond imagination, especially against the young population. Young men with 18 years old or less connected to the drug traffic, coupled with the awful economy are causing the fall of the Dominican Republic. Nobody is safe in this country anymore, first because of the low salaries of the police and military forces, next because of the bad administration of the nation resources and then because of the lack of knowledge and values of those who are in charge of the country.

My Sunday morning was rather sudden. I had to awake from my poor slumber quite early. I barely had a chance to even reach that part when you see your dreams. Accordingly I awoke to the voice of my pestering Grandmother. I showered and made my way without haste to St.Mary’s. Riding my vintage bicycle in a uniform student attire befittingly suits and calms my persona. Unfortunately though, I am always quite sweaty upon the arrival of my destination. Nonetheless, I arrived promptly in time for a confession and served as an acolyte. After the mass, I transformed myself into a delivery boy and brought donated groceries from our Parish home, to my Grandmother. To conclude, it is always recommended to have a heaping of good rest prior to becoming extremely active.
